“Dreams come true, even the impossible ones”

After one failed attempt after another, my partner and I were in no doubt: if we wanted to get pregnant, we had to put ourselves in the hands of specialists in complex cases – the Juana Crespo Team.

We’re Coral and Ana, and this is our story of motherhood as a female couple. I won’t lie to you – coming to terms with and facing a diagnosis of high reproductive complexity was by no means easy; however, it was the best decision we ever made.

In 2019, we began our treatments through the National Health Service. At first, every attempt was filled with incredible energy – a veritable mountain of positivity. But when that damned negative pregnancy test arrived, our world fell apart.

After exhausting all the options for artificial insemination and IVF available through the National Health Service, and following the poor results we’d achieved, we decided we had to find the best clinic for us and realised we needed specialists in highly complex fertility cases.

We had our first appointment at the clinic with Dr Adolfo de Prados, an experience that was a world away from anything we’d been through before. The main difference lay in receiving an accurate diagnosis: rather than repeating standard protocols, the medical team designed a personalised strategy to tackle the root cause of the problem head-on.

IVF treatment with pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)

To maximise the chances of success, the plan included a cycle of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) combined with Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT). This technique allows the embryos to be genetically analysed before transfer, so that only the euploid (chromosomally healthy) ones are selected.

Following follicular aspiration and embryo analysis, we obtained 4 healthy embryos. However, half the process involved preparing the uterine lining to ensure implantation.

Reproductive surgery and bespoke endometrial preparation

Conditioning the uterus required surgery to correct uterine scarring and optimise the endometrium. Although it was necessary to cancel some preliminary preparations to treat an endometrial infection with antibiotics, each procedure represented a step towards the ultimate goal.

On 12 May, the embryo transfer took place. Ten days later, the blood test confirmed the positive result: a twin pregnancy.

Monitoring of a high-risk pregnancy and delivery

As this was a multiple pregnancy with a complex medical history, the clinic provided rigorous medical monitoring. At week 10, following cervical shortening and bleeding, we contacted the clinic; Dr Gómez performed an emergency cervical cerclage to prevent premature labour.

After weeks of complete bed rest and treatment with heparin, Gala and Gael were born on 7 January.
